Carnival .. As a kid, I had friends in south Texas that owned a carnival and I would spend a week or two with them during the summer on thier carnival ... ah the memories of AC/DC, Poison and Gun N' Roses while on the Tilt-a-Whirl and Gravitron!

I don't like circuses because circus = clowns. Clowns = evil. Carnivals for me.

Austin: Only two things scare me...and one is nuclear war.
Basil: What's the other thing?
Austin: Come again?
Basil: What's the other thing that scares you?
Austin: Carnies, circus folk. Nomads, you know. Smell like cabbage. Small hands...

@R.T. Flak: What is that dialog from? I don't recognize it.

This was a tough choice for me, but I finally went with circus for a number of reasons:

  • The daring feats you get to watch at a circus can be pretty amazing. I'm pretty scared of heights, so the trapeze acts have always seemed insane to me.

  • Circuses usually have jugglers, and I love to watch good juggling.

  • Carnivals have become insanely expensive. As I kid we always went to the county fair on the day that you could ride anything as often as you wanted just for the cost of fair admission. Compare that with the last few times we've taken the kids to a fair (specifically the Indiana State Fair). We paid admission, then parking, then if we want to ride anything it costs an unholy amount of money. I think it cost our family of five something like $20 for one ride on the ferris wheel. (Ride tickets are $1 each, and I think the wheel was 2 tickets per person.) In. Sane.

And speaking of fairs, I've searched in vain my entire adult life to find the kind of waffles that I ate as a kid at the Clark County Fair (Ohio). They were extremely thin and crispy, and cooked in a flower-shaped mold. It was the Cox family's fair food of choice. Since I've relocated to Indiana I've never seen them at any fair, and people around here have never heard of them. If you are at a fair, carnival, or festival and you find such waffles, please buy me one and mail it to: Randy Cox, 1221 Greenfield Ave, Noblesville IN 46060. Thanks.

We had the carnival come to our small town annually. Rides, food, games. Good times.

I know I've been to the circus, but maybe only once and I was really young.

Carnival gets my vote.

Carnie try to scam you. Elephants from the circus, on the other hand, are good, honest folk who only want to walk in a line while holding each other's tails. It's adorable.

Jeremy- I think that's from the first Austin Powers.

I'd rather take my kids to a full-blown amusement park (like Cedar Point or Michigan's Adventure) rather than spend the equivalent at a local carnival. Plus, watching them shuffle the same rides around our area all summer just makes me wonder how safe they could really be. Anyways, the only reason my kids ever really want to go are for the outrageously priced games. We fixed that by buying the Carnival game for the Wii- hey, it works decently well as a substitute.

So, I voted circus- because I've never compared my life to a three-ring carnival.

Carnivals don't have any animals to exploit.

All eyes on me, in the center of the ring, just like a circus...

or

i walk these streets, in a carnival...

Natalie Merchant wins.

Plus... Clowns vs Carnies... Carnies are scary, but less scary than clowns..
