I have an important announcement to make, and I've been putting it off because it's a difficult one. I have decided that the December 1, 2009 poll, which is the third anniversary of ToT, is going to be the final poll. ToT is closing up. I hate to do it because I have become quite attached to our small group of regulars and I feel like I'm evicting you all or something. But the fact is that I just can't give ToT the attention that it needs and I really have to let it go. I was hoping that bringing on Paul to be my backup would solve the problem. I intended for him to just pick up my slack--schedule a poll here and there if I had forgotten, moderate comments or fix problems that might crop up when I'm away, etc--but what actually happened is that once Paul came on board I started leaving more and more of the day-to-day stuff for him to do. Now Paul does pretty much everything, and that's not what he signed up for.

I had plans to redesign the site and take it to it's own website separate from Cox-TV. I wanted to make user accounts, stats pages, redesign the administrative interface (which Paul has not even seen because the pages didn't work so well once we had thousands and thousands of submissions in the database)... stuff that would make the site easier to use and maintain. But the fact is that I don't even have the time to fix stuff when it breaks, let alone add new features.

It's been a good run, and it has been a lot of fun. ToT brought together a group of people from all over the world, and we have become a close knit bunch. We have several weeks to figure out what we can do to keep in touch after Dec 1. Should I set up a regular old discussion forum? A Google Group? Should we just all use Facebook?

I've sat here a long time because I don't want to click "submit"! I feel like I'm letting you all down. I hope you all will come to understand.

That would have made an excellent April Fool's Day post, Randy.

Ok, first things first...

Throwdown are exciting, hoedowns are fun, but a hottenanny is both exciting and fun, and it's also a Wanker county tradition!

Now on to Mr. Randy - though it saddens me to hear that ToT is ending, please don't feel bad about it.
It's OK. Yes, we all enjoy voting and posting our comments here, and making OSR's, and all that, but all good things must come to an end. I'm sorry that I discovered ToT late in the game. A heartfelt thanks goes out to you and all the ToT'ers for all the great polls and comments.

Now to everyone else - let's make the last 6 weeks of ToT the best we have ever seen!

Forgive my spelling mistakes:

It should read : Throwdowns and Hootenanny.

Thanks...

LOL Roland, I thought you were wishing for a hot nanny. (just kidding)
= )

Randy, don't feel bad, believe me, we understand. I've had a great time visiting here, but I can't imagine how time consuming this site could be. And for the record, you have NOT let us down!!

Your Dictatorialness, I object strongly. You aren't trying hard enough. Have you tried impressing Stockwell into service as Paul's assistant? Hell, I'll do something if that's what you really need. I realize that it will mean decentralization of the ToTovernment, but sharing the responsibility isn't necessarily a bad thing and history looks quite fondly upon dictators who voluntarily give up power.
Besides, you can't give up now. I haven't even used half of Stockwell's polls.

Most of the Stockwell polls that I haven't used are about Seinfeld. You should thank me, Gia.

In all seriousness, I am not opposed to giving up power. The problem is that there are no easy-to-use administration pages behind ToT. Right now all of the poll scheduling, redacting, etc, is all done by directly altering database fields using phpMyAdmin. It's not especially difficult to use, but it's certainly not a friendly interface. Plus there's the fact that one wrong click could wipe out the whole database (okay, maybe two or three specific wrong clicks in succession). If there is a ToTer who is comfortable with PHP programming and MySQL administration, I would be happy to let them take a crack at creating behind-the-scenes administrative pages that are easy to use. Or, if there is a ToTer who is familiar with MySQL and is willing to take on the responsibility of keeping ToT going in the current state, I'm open to that option, too.

I wish I could be as comfortable with the end of ToTopia as some others appear to be, but I'm not. I also wish I knew how to do that MySQL stuff, but as far as I know MySQL means MySquirrel. Makes sense to me...

I vote for a triumvirate between Paul, Gia, and Stockwell.

Well that is a problem. I'll make an inquiry to the computer center either tomorrow or Thursday. So that my question can be more specific, which functions of MySQL should I focus on and what would my overall objective be in using it? ("Please teach me MySQL" might be a bit too broad to work with.) I can't promise anything, but I'll as none the less.

The iGoogle gadget works now! justintimeforthedemiseoftort

I envision a page. The first person to get there each day throws a poll out as a comment. Votes are made through comments. Just the group of commenting ToTers.

Emilyisabella - I like the idea of that, the only problem I see is that it could be unfair to the people who can't get on at that time because of work and whatnot. Normally I'd say tough nails, early bird catches the worm. But in this situation, some people who have really good ideas may be restricted from suggesting polls.

There's a song by Miley Cyrus called "Hoedown Throwdown." I really like it, so I wanted to vote for both of them.

Says Randy, the This or That? administrator:

@emilyisabella: Your idea would work on a forum. The poll topic could be the thread title. The person who chose today's poll could pick someone to post the following day's poll. That would address the timing problem that Swif mentioned. A Google group would also work. Post to the group with the poll as the subject line. Reply to the poll message or to one of the other replies. (Replying to a specific comment is another thing I've been wanting to add to ToT for a long while.)

And yes, I figured out what was wrong with the Google Gadget. My hosting company (Dreamhost) switched cox-tv.com to a different server at the end of September and a setting didn't carry over.

In typical ToT commenting fashion, topics start and end throughout the day. At times, we've had our own unofficial polls running in comments. Those who don't get up at the crack of 3a could throw out a new poll in the middle of the day. We're not I-was-here-first people.

All good things, indeed.

I would love to be able to come to some consensus about a way to keep this community alive in one way or another and I'm glad that we have a few weeks to (hopefully) figure something out.

Randy, I've been wondering what happened to all my Seinfeld-related polls! :-)

No! You can't go! All the plants are gonna die! (sorry, couldn't resist my favorite line from Stripes)

Seriously, I know that the creative and computer-savvy folks around here will be able to fugure something out!

emilyisabella- Very good list to start! Rob Slaven and Rob are two different people. There's also Theodopolis, Squidy, and Judith. I know there are others, but my brain seems to have stopped working.

I'm not into country life for the most part, so no hoedowns for me. I like Throwdown with Bobby Flay enough. There you have my vote!

This is not a good way to start a day. I saw that yesterdays poll was still up, and I thought I'd get on here and razz Randy a little, or Paul if you will. I had no idea I would get kicked in the gut like this. I am willing to do whatever is needed to help this wonderful group of people stay in Totopolis. I think it's time to rally the troops folks! I hope the elves don't win this one, I have an idea they are behind this somehow.
